Part 3 traces what narrator Massimo Marinoni calls the “corrupt and disastrous reign” of the Medici popes, Giovanni (Leo X) and Giulio (Clement VII), from 1512 to 1534. It was during those years that the Reformation began, fueled by Martin Luther's outrage at Leo's practice of selling indulgences to support his lavish lifestyle. Also during those years, Leo and Clement commissioned Michelangelo to paint frescoes on the Sistene Chapel ceiling. His final one: the tortured “Last Judgment.” It was,
